Sugarcoated Ways

Something is broken I can't fix with string
Or wax or words or beautiful things
Something is broken
You won't say it's true
You lean over bridges
Is it for the view?
You criticize me with a smile upon your face
Pick your poison and mask the aftertaste

What's behind the berries?
The chocolate-covered cherries?
I'm wondering what you'll say
In your sugarcoated ways
In your sugarcoated ways
You got sugar

Something is broken that I cannot save
With beaches or mountains or warm holidays
Something unspoken
A saccharine pact
I had your protection
But you needed it back
You say "Taste this rock candy on a tray"
But I can tell there's glass inside the glaze

What's behind the berries?
The chocolate-covered cherries?
I'm wondering what you'll say
In your sugarcoated ways
The frost beneath the frosting
Is arsenic in the icing
There's hate in every cake
You got sugarcoated ways
You got sugarcoated ways
You got sugar

Something is broken that I cannot fix
With sugar and spice Or Devil's Food mix
Something was frozen
Confectioners' heart
We swallow love letters 'til our tongues turn tart

Criticizing
There's a smile upon your face
But I can't take it
Or the aftertaste

What's behind the berries?
The chocolate-covered cherries?
I'm wondering what you'll say
In your sugarcoated ways
The frost beneath the frosting
Is arsenic in the icing
There's hate in every cake
You've got sugarcoated ways

What's behind the berries?
The chocolate-covered cherries?
I'm wondering what you'll say
In your sugarcoated ways
You got sugarcoated ways
